  • Start date: 05/07/2017
  • End date: 05/07/2017

The island of La Réunion, located in the middle of the Indian Ocean, is home to an exceptional biodiversity. It harbours numerous endemic yet fragile species. Two LIFE projects were launched on the island for the period going from 2014 to 2020: the LIFE+ Forêt séche and the LIFE+ Pétrels. Their respective goals are to slow and halt the disappearance of the island's unique dry forest as well as its two endemic species of petrels.

For the 25th anniversary of the LIFE programme, a joint event was carried out by the coordinator of the two projects, La Réunion National Park, in order to highlight the wonderful opportunities that the LIFE instrument has brought to La Reunion biodiversity conservation. On this occasion, the LIFE+ Pétrels's new office, located within Saint-Pierre city's sous-préfecture, was inaugurated by Monsieur le sous-préfet, and several endemic species of Ruizia cordata tree were planted by  the LIFE+Forêt Sèche in the sous-préfecture's gardens. All the local stakeholders supporting the LIFE projects were present: elected officials, beneficiaries and financial partners !
